Worried about bumps after Botox? Learn what causes them, how long they last, what is normal after anti-wrinkle treatment, and when to contact your injector.
I've Got Bumps After Botox Treatment: Is It Normal?
If you’ve just had anti-wrinkle treatment and noticed small bumps where the product was injected, try not to panic. This is one of the most common things people search after Botox, especially if it is their first treatment or if something looks a bit different from last time.
In most cases, these little raised bumps are completely normal and temporary. They are usually caused by the fluid sitting just under the skin immediately after injection, along with a bit of local swelling from the needle itself. Mild swelling, redness, soreness and bruising are all recognised short-term effects after botulinum toxin injections.
The good news is that small post-treatment bumps usually settle quite quickly. The key is knowing what is normal, what is not, and when to get advice.
Why do bumps appear after Botox?
Botox is placed into specific muscles using a very fine needle. Straight after treatment, you may notice tiny raised areas, a bit like small mosquito bites or pin-prick swellings. This can happen because:
the product has just been injected into the area
the skin has reacted to the needle
there is a little temporary swelling around the injection site
some people simply swell more than others
That does not automatically mean anything has gone wrong. In fact, most mild side effects after botulinum toxin injections are temporary and are often related to the injection process itself.
How long do Botox bumps last?
For most people, the small bumps fade the same day, often within 20 minutes to a few hours. Mild swelling can occasionally last until the next day. Bruising, if it happens, can last longer, but that is different from the small raised bumps people usually worry about straight after treatment.
If you are looking in the mirror straight after treatment and thinking, “Why do I have lumps after Botox?”, that is usually just the treatment settling in.
Is it normal if I’ve had Botox before and this never happened?
Yes. It can still be normal.
Even if you have had anti-wrinkle treatment many times before, your skin can react slightly differently from one appointment to the next. Small changes in hydration, skin sensitivity, recent exercise, alcohol, medications, allergies, or just normal tissue response can make bumps appear more noticeable on one occasion than another.
So if you are thinking, “This has never happened before”, that does not automatically mean there is a problem.
What is normal after Botox?
Common short-term effects after treatment can include:
tiny raised bumps at the injection points
slight redness
mild tenderness
a small bruise
a mild tight or heavy feeling as the treatment starts to work
These effects are usually mild and temporary.
What if Botox bumps last longer than expected?
In most cases, small raised bumps after anti-wrinkle treatment settle within a few hours. Mild swelling, redness, soreness and bruising can happen after botulinum toxin injections, and these side effects are usually mild and temporary.
If bumps or swelling last longer than expected, or appear to be getting worse rather than better, contact your injector for advice. Persistent swelling can sometimes reflect irritation or a sensitivity reaction and should be assessed properly. Official prescribing information also warns about hypersensitivity reactions, and botulinum toxin products are contraindicated where there is infection at the proposed injection site.
Seek advice sooner if you notice increasing redness, heat, tenderness, marked itching, worsening puffiness, discharge, visual symptoms, or anything that feels significantly worse rather than better.
Should you massage Botox bumps?
Usually, no.
In most cases, it is best to leave the area alone unless your practitioner has specifically told you otherwise. Rubbing, pressing or fiddling with the area straight after treatment is generally not advised.
Do bumps after Botox mean it has gone wrong?
Usually not.
The presence of small bumps straight after treatment does not mean the Botox has been injected incorrectly, and it does not mean the treatment will fail. In many cases, it is simply the visible effect of the injected fluid and minor local swelling, and it settles without affecting the final result.
Remember, Botox does not work instantly. The anti-wrinkle effect still takes several days to begin developing, with the full result usually assessed around two weeks after treatment.
The bottom line
Small bumps after Botox are usually normal, common and temporary. They often settle within hours and are not usually a sign that anything has gone wrong. Mild swelling, redness and tenderness can also happen and typically settle on their own.
If bumps or swelling are lingering or getting worse rather than better, it is important to contact your injector so the area can be assessed properly.
